Russian oil refinery orders additional tank cars
PJSC Slavneft-Yanos, one of the largest oil refineries in Russia which is part of NGK Slavneft, ordered from United Wagon Company (UWC) an additional batch of molten sulfur and sulphuric acid tank cars mounted on 25-tonne axle-load bogies. The cars will be shipped to the refinery in the four quarter of this year.
The tank car of Model 15-6913 is designed to transport molten sulphur. Its load capacity of 72 tonnes and tank volume of 44 m3 allow carrying up to 9 tonnes more of freight, compared to the car’s counterparts running on standard bogies with 23.5 – tonne axle load.
The sulphuric acid tank cars of Model 15-9545 have a load capacity of 77 tonnes and the tank volume of 44 m3, can accommodate by 12% more cargo than its common – type counterparts. The tank cars will be manufactured at Tikhvin Freight Car Building Plant, part of UWC.
Both tank car models feature increased load capacity, which reduces the empty – run tariff component and, therefore, transport costs per tonne of freight. It also decreases the size of the railcar fleet required for shipment and, accordingly, investment costs to purchase rolling stock.
The increased operational reliability of Tikhvin railcars allows to save on railcar maintenance and repair operations during their life cycles, which are 32 years for molten sulphur tank cars and 18 years for sulphuric acid tank cars. Moreover, the maintenance interval of Tikhvin tank cars have a significantly longer maintenance interval: up to 1 million km, or 8 years.
In 2020, the refinery signed an agreement with UWC to deliver sulphur tank cars with a 25-tonne axle load.
UWC and Slavneft-Yanos have been cooperating since 2017. Upon implementation of the new contract, the total number of Tikhvin railcars in the refinery’s fleet will exceed 60 units. The rolling stock set to join the fleet of Slavneft-Yanos is mounted on innovative 18-9855 bogies with increased axle load of 25 tonnes, which significantly increases loads each car can accommodate.
